Dora, how did you start in yoga?
I started Yoga during my second pregnancy following a need for purpose in my life. I was working full time, married, mother of one and soon to give birth, and I didn’t know who I was or where was I taking part in living my life. I first went to a yoga class while pregnant with my second daughter and felt connected for the first time in years. The silence and space for introspection and listening awakened a very-needed spark in me. Soon after giving birth, I found in vinyasa yoga a place to listen to my body and its wisdom while doing great postures and sweating the stress of my system. It’s been more than 20 years now; Yoga was love at first sight from day 1.
How long have you been practicing/teaching?
I have been practicing Yoga for 21 years and teaching for around 12.
What are your certifications and qualifications?
I completed the Yoga Alliance E-RYT 200, became certified as a Yoga school facilitator of yoga teacher training, and am Urban Priestess authorized by the urban priestess mystery school.
Why is it essential we practice meditation and Yoga as we mature?
As we mature, women need more personal space to do what we love and tap into our essence. It is a natural call for every woman that, if not attended, will provoke unwanted emotions and loss of her creative energy. Meditation offers a tool to go deep inside and listen to our innermost longings to create a life that inspires us and those around us. Yoga provides the strength and flexibility imperative for bone health and physical well-being. Meditation and Yoga do a perfect practice combination for the years to come.
What are the physical and mental benefits of Yoga?
There are so many benefits that it is difficult to fit them into a simple answer. However, it’s scientifically proven that Yoga improves your mood swings, strengthens your capacity to focus, elevates the spirit, and gives clarity and a feeling of calmness and hope, among many others. Physically it is a great way to strengthen the muscles and develop flexibility; it also improves your breathing pattern and capacity, increasing cellular regeneration and overall good health. Benefits are received immediately after the first practice and are so evident you’ll want to come back at it. There are also many spiritual benefits received by practicing Yoga; by spiritual benefits, I mean a sense of being ok with who you are and a desire to grow and find meaning in life, which for me, is the most relevant benefit of this philosophy.
Where should someone start their practice if they are a beginner?
There are many ways to start doing Yoga; with so many resources today, you can practically find it everywhere you look. My advice is to research and try to find a teacher/place that makes you feel good and resonates with your needs. It’s always a good idea to check credentials and experience before making a choice.
Does YOU recommend any online classes?

I know essential oils are used often in the practice of meditation and Yoga. Can you share a little bit about their use and benefits for us?
Essential oils are, as I like to call them, the soul of plants in our hands. They are extracted through pure pressing and distillation processes from the leaves, stems, roots, and flowers of plants and put into small glass bottles that preserve the same molecular structure as the plant. Essential oils allow us to use plants safely in our everyday life to heal, clean and enhance our quality of life.
We can obtain infinite benefits from using essential oils and supporting a healthy lifestyle by cleaning our houses and bodies from unwanted toxic chemicals. Instead, with essential oils, we can heal physically and emotionally using the power of plants.
There are three ways of using essential oils: aromatically, topically, and internally. Aromatically, as its name implies, we use essential oils by smelling them directly from the bottle, using our hands, or using a diffuser. Typically this way of use is beneficial for emotional well-being and cleaning spaces. Topically we use essential oils to treat pain in specific parts of our body that need it. And internally, we use them to support healing from the inside out and for digestion purposes.
Are there certain scents that you recommend?
It all depends on what anyone needs at a specific moment in their lives. Some of my favorite scents are lavender to clean spaces and energy in general and geranium for awakening feminine energy and self-love.
When looking for essential oils, it is most important to source 100% natural essential oils, and if, on top of that, you also would like to support our Earth, it’s vital to look for socially and eco-friendly brands. My favorite brand, and the one with which I work, is doTERRA.
